New secretary: Mike
August 4th, 2010Congratulations to Mike for becoming the new club Secretary

Congratulations to Mike for becoming the new club Secretary

Ever busy over the summer break several of the club members were at the London Leg of the “World Series Triathlon” this weekend (24th and 25th July). Providing the kayakers to the 40+ strong team of Lifeguards at the event, the guys and girls provided safety cover to over 3000 competitors throughout the weekend. With events ranging from the Professional Elite athletes, to the National Junior Championships and open Age Group categories, the team clocked up hundreds of paddling kilometers around the Hyde Park venue.
As a massive international field saw the best 65 female and male elite tri-athletes in the world take on the course, the main races were internationally televised. Check out BBC iplayer for all the action…

The weather was fantastic and loads of fun was had by eveyone who took part. “Special” mention has to go to Chris for so dedicatedly not removing his sunglasses to ensure the perfect facial tan lines. Also Ali, who had apparently forgotten exactly how “noisy” sleeping in University Halls can be! A particularly heroic performance was put in by the lifeguard catering team who provided not only all the food for everyone involved, but went that extra step providing a very welcome 42 pizzas to the 20 strong team who stayed for dinner on Saturday night!

We will be making a couple trips to the Cardiff White Water centre in preperation for THE ALPS
This Sunday (June 6th) NORMAL FLOW.
Meeting at 9am at stores. It’s £10 to get in and petrol/bridge toll will be about £5 depending on numbers. If
you haven’t already posted on the forums, can you email rach (rf7859) if you’re coming.
Next Wednesday (June 9th)REDUCED FLOW.
PLUS we will also be going to Up and Under beforehand for a KIT TRIP for any
equipment or stuff you might want for the Alps. We’ll be going to the big
store in Cardiff which has lots of outdoor/camping equipment as well as
paddling stuff.
Meet at stores for the kit trip at 1:45 pm. If you don’t want to go to the
kit night, or can’t make it that early, there may be a car going
(depending on numbers) at around 4. So far I have Me, Lou, Maryann, Sarah,
Katherine, Alice, Sky, James, Rob, Neil and Tom going. Please let me know
if you want to come, and if you want to come to Up and Under as well.
Again, the cost will be £10 for paddling plus around £5 for petrol,
depending on numbers.
See you all soon, Alps is only 2 weeks away so get paddling.
The polo weekend of the year-BUCS!! Just to set the scene-the sun shone, the grass was green, and surprisingly sandy, I’d ask why but I’m pretty certain I’d get an engineer’s long winded response. Anyway tents were pitched…except for Mike’s, even the engineers would have difficulty getting a tent up without any poles, pegs or inner! Good job our illustrious captain bought a spare.
First of all congratulations must be given to Emma becoming the new Kit officer for Southampton Uni at their AGM held on the Saturday night….I remember a dirty pint and some nudity being involved…..maybe we should consider taking tips from their clubs AGM….no….ah well
Onto the tournament……there was a new system in place this year which unfortunately meant the dolphins were drawn in their 1st 2 games against teams that came 3rd and 5th. They put up a good fight but lost putting the dolphins automatically in the lower playoffs. Gutted. Obviously once there the guys went on to make a mockery of the system by obliterating the remaining teams while Neil binned Rob as often as possible, Dan and Si tried their luck from the half way line, and Rob was sent off for making the “easy pass” to Neil….no paddle shots scored though guys….disappointing!
Onto the Marmot Old boys who put on quite a show with Seb pelting in several goals and Craig generally mucking in, fouling and scoring and looking generally shocked/chuffed at having managed either. Not to forgot Pross’ glory goal recovered from a bad dribble. Unlucky not to get into the top 10 though, only missing out on goal difference.
The Monkeys from a complete scratch team did amazingly well with awesome shooting-Matt and Chris leading the team to a couple of victories, beginners Ben, Emma and very nearly Becky rolling, and Alice sneaking a couple of shots in to inspire the rest of the team. Truly entertaining games to watch.

Moving on to the Vixens….IMMENSENESS!! 8th place getting BUCS points! And let’s not forget we did actually beat the silver medallists-Nottingham in our 1st game! Imagine if we had had the energy for our 2nd match against them………..! Awesome defending and incredible shooting, and most amazingly the lads actually getting worked up enough to properly cheer us on!! We must have “been better” …..hope your proud that advice helped us so much……can’t wait till next year!
No swimmers, not even me!
No broken paddles. Van animals decorated generously
Chairs stolen and hats broken by Bath. The acquirement of a hobby horse=new mascot.
Special mention for Katie playing with an arm that looked rather minging….keep away from the horses (and cows) a few weeks before the tournament next year vets! But how awesome was Katie, being our highest goal scorer, and what a trooper for not complaining once!!
A note of official warning to Ali. You may have avoided the obligatory end of tournament swim, but you will be prime bait for all summer tournaments.
True Story.
Lou (of the tall variety)
(Yes I am shamelessly abusing my standing with the Kit Officer to get information officer for next yr-cheeky cheeky…but as I’m here…..vote for ME!)
We will be heading to the Lansdown pub THIS THURSDAY for the AGM. Get there for 8:30, or meet at the pool after the pool session at 8.
